Calling all bay area’ residents
Officials in Penfield, Irondequoit and Webster are looking for volunteers to head a committee charged with revamping a waterfront revitalization document.The volunteers would be part of a steering committee which would comb through the towns’ Local Waterfront Revitalization Program (LWRP) so it could be updated in light of changes the state has made to its policies regarding waterfront development.Each town would like between seven and 10 people who work or live near the bay to sign up for the committee, according to Jim Costello, director of development services. “We’re trying to get people who are stakeholders in that area,” he said.So far, Ingalls Planning and Design has been hired by the towns of Penfield, Irondequoit and Webster to update the program. The document was adopted by Penfield nearly 20 years ago, Costello said. Irondequoit and Webster officials adopted their plans around the same time.The LWRP is an optional program offered by New York state and offers communities along water with grant opportunities and other assistance in developing the waterfront, according to the Web site for the state’s Division of Coastal Resources. Each of the three towns received a $20,000 state grant — $60,000 total — to update the program, Costello said.“It’s going to be rewritten and totally revamped because the policies have been changed since the original LWRP’s were put together,” he said.The state recently redid its master LWRP, which consisted of 44 policies relating to the environment and economic development the towns had to adhere to, Costello said. Those policies were narrowed down to just 13 policies with subsets. At this point, Costello can’t say what will be changed, since that’s the committee’s responsibility.Nearly 70 municipalities have a version of the LWRP on file, the DOC’s Web site said. Costello said the three towns will be working in unison on their individual LWRP so they are similar.Penfield has the least amount of waterfront, which is at the foot of Irondequoit Bay where LaSalle’s Landing is. LaSalle’s Landing itself is a product of the benefits reaped by the LWRP.“The creation of LaSalle’s landing was really the result of funding received to develop plans … for revitalization of those areas,” Costello said.Webster and Irondequoit have considerably more waterfront, since each of those have a side of the bay and coast along Lake Ontario.
